Mini Clinical Examination Exercise (mini-CEX)

This workplace-based assessment is for you if you need an assessment or observation of your interactions with either a patient or a fellow medical professional in a clinical setting. This is meant to be a quick 15-20 minute assessment.
Areas the Mini-CEX Evaluates
The mini-CEX has 7 areas that the assessor will be evaluating on a 6 point scale (1 being below expectations and 6 above expectations) It will look at:
- History-taking
- Physical examination
- Communication skills
- Clinical judgement
- Professionalism
- Organisation and efficiency
- Overall clinical care
Our form is developed for use with trainee ACPs therefore our benchmark for ‘Meets Expectations’ may be different than if you are currently a practising ACP. Be sure you and your assessor are clear on what the expectation is for your current level of practice.
Examples of situations where a mini-CEX might be useful
Ambulatory Paediatrics: History taking in clinic or a clinical examination in A&E
Acute Paediatrics: Ward round handover or bedside MDT discussion
Acute Neonatal: Ward round handover or a delivery handover
